We are officially down to two weeks left! *insert cheers here*! With classes winding down and hammering us with work, it is a hectic time in the office of student activities! We had some vicious poker action yesterday, complete with mood-setting poker lights. When I left at midnight, there were still about 9 players left! Yikes! Well, congrats to all involved, it was fun and exciting! On sunday, the Office of Student Activities is sponsoring Ride For Mom down at Wilmer Park with Andrew Laux! It starts at 9 and goes to 1 pm! Be there because I will! Have a wicked hot friday WAC! Adios!

7th Inning Stretch

The semester is winding down, and we are in the home stretch with the last couple weeks upon us. But, that does not mean we are not busy-busy getting ready to end the semester with a bang. In the next two weeks, we have multiple events, the first ever Student Center Triathlon, the second annual WAC Iron Chef, the third annual Leadership Celebration, and the second annual Mayday Revolution. To go along with those traditions, we have the last open mic night tomorrow evening and the last dance of the semester on Saturday, April 24th. Needless to say, it is going to be an exciting last couple weeks.

Also, i would like to give a shout out to Alex Insel and the Traditions Committee for all their work with Survivor. From the feedback, the people who participated thoroughly enjoyed the event and found it to be one of the best events they have witnessed at Washington College. Alex Insel and Emma Schlauch (the new Director of Traditions, because Alex Insel is studying abroad and won't be here next semester...) put in a ton of time preparing for this event, and should be applauded for their efforts. Throughout the semester, Alex spent tremendous amounts of time and energy putting every detail of Survivor together, and it turned out to be better than advertised. Well done Alex, Emma, and the Traditions Committee, well done!

jared

The energy on campus is awesome right now!

WAC Survivor is about to begin in just a few hours!!! The WAC Series of Poker is going into its final week before the championship tournament. The competition has been intense, and at this point, anyone could go home with grand prize! Also, the SEB will be hosting WAC’s first ever Survivor Competition. Director of Traditions, Alex Insel, and his team have spent countless hours planning and amazing, incredibly fun two days of competition for the Survivor participants. Now, I know all of this sounds wonderful and you’re thinking to yourself, “How could it possibly get any better than this?”

WELL IT DOES….

In the next couple of weeks the OSA and SEB will be hosting: Iron Chef WAC, the Student Center Triathlon, the May Day Revolution, and THE LEADERSHIP CELEBRATION.

So, join as we fight to defeat Mr. End of the Semester Blues with one awesome event after another!

All love. Also next week is the musical A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. The cast and crew has worked incredibly hard for the last 3 plus months to bring this production to campus. It is ridiculously funny and has quite a few plot twists. OSA's amazing Student Center Intern had created the most beautiful, four foot tall ace of spades this campus has ever seen! Within one hour of putting the card on display in order to advertise for the poker league, it had mysteriously vanished. A report has been filed with Public Safety; however, they have yet to leap into action to solve this case. Now on to the good stuff. The snow is almost gone and hopefully we wont get anymore. Also 59 hours until spring break starts not that we didn't just have a week off a little while ago. For those of you that don't know the SEB and the OSA both have applications out for next year. Both organizations play a major role on campus and I encourage everyone on campus that wants to leave a mark to apply. the applications can be found in the Office of STudent Activities or on the respective websites. Also for those of you that dont know boondock saints ii will be playing the thursday after break. Also the drama department will be showing Spring Awakening after break as well as the musical A funny Thing Happened on the way to the Forum. This is the first musical in a number of years at WAC and I suggest everyone goes to see it. Also without realizing spring break has infact crept up on us again and in just a few short weeks the seniors will graduate and summer will be in full swing. Its hard to believe that WAC saw record amounts of snow two weeks ago and now we are getting ready for next year. Also I hope everyone enjoyed Birthday ball this year. So far this semester we have had an amazing line-up of events, with of course Birthday Ball, Heads You Win!, multiple dance parties, open mic nights, an indoor movie, a Super Bowl Party, a karaoke night, along with many more. To top that all off, there are pool and ping-pong leagues currently running in the Game Center, not to mention, sign-ups for the new WAC Series of Poker (WSOP), that starts the week after spring break!

Now for the best news of all, it is that time of year again where people can apply to be more involved on campus. Currently, the Student Events Board is accepting applications for the Executive Board, AND the Office of Student Activities Internship Program is about to put out applications for internships. If you are looking for leadership experience or pre-professional experience, coupled with a captivating creative outlet, then an internship or executive board position is for you!

One last thing, i would like to thank the Birthday Ball Planning Committee for all their hard work this year. Without them, this office, coupled with the Student Government Association would not have been able to plan and execute such a wonderful Birthday Ball event. So if you see Kate McKelvey on campus (or any of her Assistant Directors), please give her a HUGE HUG...or maybe just a thank you would do ;-)

jared

Birthday BALL!

Another huge event finished, another school week started! Birthday Ball this year was fantastic, so many crazy lights(enough to fill Ed's quota for the year I'm sure) and many many alumni back to WAC. I had a blast reuniting with them over some sweet, albeit insane, dance music and of course all of the parties! This years theme was Ice Palace, and although there was actually no ice to speak of, the decor was pretty wicked. Snowflakes, music, dancing....what more do you need! Anyway, I would just like to thank everyone involved with making this night a success, including yes. Edward Hoegg. Champion among men(in the realm of lighting design that is). Just kidding Ed, but the OSA really is appreciative to all of those who helped set up and tear down very early Sunday morning. So lets give them a hand! (Clap, Clap, Clap). Alright! Well, have another great week WAC and remember, Spring Break is only two weeks away! Adios amigos.

Classes are back in session and there are four awesome events coming up during the next two weeks of February. No matter how you say it, it all adds up to a week of canceled classes and lots and lots of fun in the Office of Student Activities. But, before I tell you all the ways that the OSA has been making Frosty proud this week, let me catch you up on what we did before Chestertown, Maryland turned into the North Pole.

On Sunday, we, along with Campus Christian Fellowship and Campus and Campus Catholic Ministries, showed the big game on a big screen (a projector screen set up in the Student Center Lounge). Today, the Student Events Board completed its second annual “Heads You Win” tournament. But, as usual, we’re taking it all in stride. Today, the SEB hosted a Snowman Making contest. Over the next few days as we’re anticipating round 2 of the blizzard from…well, wherever blizzards come from…the Student Center will be filled with board game nights, video game tournaments, and much, much, more! Just checking in for the first time this semester! Its been a pretty hectic one on my end. Class, getting everything ready for the students again, its been a real hassle. One awesome thing that we are doing is having a staff/faculty open house on Thursday between 3 and 5 PM! Here the faculty and staff can meet both the SGA and the OSA and.....drumroll....Happy Hour! Yes, there will be a cash bar and yes it will be fun! Can't wait to be there! Hope everyone has a great start to the year and beyond! Much love WAC,

Tim

BOOM...we got you!

Second week...the week after our first together...and what a good first week it was! The office had two very successful programs, with the showing of Law Abiding Citizen and the Dance Back to WAC party. Both programs spotlighted the two new members of Student Events Board, Alex Lating, Director of Variety Events, and Sally O'Donnell, Director of Party Planning. Each added their own new twists to typical events, with the offering of food (mozzarella sticks!) and fun. Look for more great events to come from them and the rest of SEB!

In the world of the Student Center, we have new leagues forming, with cash prizes for the winners, so make sure to pick up your registration form for pool or ping-pong (or both!). Also, Student Activities is proud to be holding its semesterly Leadership Experience (summit of leaders to explore leadership). This time we have tons of differing leadership topics to experience and explore. Look for more information from OSA in the coming week!

On a finishing note, the Student Events Board will be hosting the first open mic night of the semester in collaboration with Musician's Union. AND, myself, jared halter, is planning to perform...so if you are looking for a laugh from someone making a complete fool of themselves out of a lack of talent, make sure to come check that out! While you are adding that to your calendar, place SEB General Interest Meeting on Thursday night down there as well. Where you will be able to meet the executive board and hear how your voice can make a difference!

Anyway, i hope everyone is enjoying their semester, and i see you around soon!

jared...aka lil j

Sring Semester 2010

Hey everyone! We're all back from winter break and classes have begun. My junior year has definitely been filled with some of the most amazing classes I've had. For the first full weekend back, SEB has an awesome dance party planned. It will be this Friday in the Egg and starts at 9PM. Some awesome new video games have come in and new ping pong, pool, poker, NHL and FIFA leagues are being formed. If you're interested, make sure to stop by the Student Center and sign up! As far as the web goes, I will be working with WAC clubs to get their websites up and running, as well as updating old sites. If you're a part of a club and want to work on the website, please email Lmuir2.

Facts YOU should know about the global gender gap:

Please keep in mind that woman and man are the only genders recognized within these statistics.

Finals!

Hey WAC! I know if you're like me, you are probably knee deep in books and papers and wishing you had some sort of magical time travel device. The end is so soon, yet so far away. We are nearly there, time to push on! Well, this year at the OSA has been an adventure. Moving in to the dining hall, setting up everything. Everything has been fun, yet challenging. I think the thing I am most proud of this year was seeing everyone finally getting to enjoy the student center again. Those seniors out there bet they were freshmen again, yeah? Its been awesome WAC! Since we believe in keeping the party going until the very last second, the Student Events Board will be hosting a Madden Tournament on the last day of classes (December 10th).

But it wait, it's still getting better.........

We've decorated the Student Center to celebrate the holiday season. In the true spirit of the holiday season, we'll be giving away prizes at all of those great tournaments including MONEY (say goodbye to being a "broke college student").

On a more serious note, since this is my last post of the Fall Semester and the year 2009, let me just say that it has been an absolute privilege working in the Office and the Student Center. Serving the campus is what our office is all about, and we live to give the student body the opportunity to grow and have ridiculous amounts of fun all at the same time. And I promise you that the OSA will continue working to make sure that the campus truly continues to get better.

Happy Holidays :-)
Anjelica

PS. Now, back to the Snowflake Ball ;-)

Well the semester at WAC is almost over but there are a few last things going on. Firstly, as many of you know, the next President of Washington College will be announced tomorrow at 330 in Decker Theatre. Secondly, the theatre is showing Monologues From the Edge, which I was the lighting designer for on Friday and Saturday nights. The SEB also has a few events left including the Madden Tournament on December 10th. SEB is also hosting the Snowflake Ball tonight, the
3rd, which should prove to be fun and very loud as soon as Dan B lets me turn the music up all of the way. I would also like to point out that ZTA Sorority is hosting Pinkapalooza tomorrow night, Friday the 4th, which is raising money in order to benefit breast cancer treatments. Other than that, I would like to remind all of those out there that are part of a club that the OSA has a full tech service but you need to hand in the request form TWO WEEKS prior to the day of the event. Lastly, I would like to wish everyone happy holidays.

Fall is slipping away and I don't even mind.

So its a veritable race against the clock as I write this blog at the same time as the highly motivated and quick fingered Ed Hoegg. Who will win in the race for time?
Before I begin I just want to remind all of you reading tonight that it is the evening of the Snowflake Ball! This fabulous SEB event is going to be held in the Student Center, so put on your khakis or a dress and come experience the winter wonderland at 9pm.
The office is becoming suspiciously covered with books and binders as the OSA interns settle down to rock their finals and finish the semester with a bang. I love seeing everyone running around knowing that after these few weeks of hustle and bustle we can all go home for some eggnog by the fire and some well earned rest.
Today we saw a visit by the all mighty Board of Visitors and Governers which put us in a tizzy as we worked to make the student center look its best.

The highlights of the seasonal makeover?

Kiss your loved one under the mistletoe in the game room entrance- maybe it will help make up for kicking her/hir/hys/his butt at Smash Bros.

Check out the lights along the walkway by George's head

the live lemon tree by the steps to the dining hall!

This is my last blog of the season so let me wish everyone a happy Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and winter break!

Peace
Katie

Almost Thanksgiving!

Hey everyone,

I heard comedy week was a blast!! Its comedy week, as you most likely know, and it has been hilarious! Last night was the Student Comedy Competition and id like to thank everyone who participated! Corey was just spot on, and deserved to win after coming up short last year. Ben had possibly the loudest laugh of the night, while he achieved second. And finally, rounding out the top three was Balen, a freshman who was great as well. Also, yesterday was the OSA's open house event! While the turnout wasn't outstanding, the Center for Student Involvement and Development is steadily getting more people to come and use its resources. I hope everyone comes out today for the RAVE at 11 pm in the egg and Jamie Kennedy on Sunday! See you there!!

-Tim

COMEDY WEEK!!!

This week marks the second annual Student Events Board Comedy Week...which means...lots of laughs and memories! i know i am really excited for all the great events SEB has worked so hard to plan for everyone!! One of my favorite events every year is the Student Comedy Competition, which will be Thursday evening. We have such a large group of talented people on this campus, that it is always a joy to watch contestants showcase their talent and compete for awesome prizes.

Also, this year, the Student Events Board is proudly holding the first ever Rave at Washington College. This event will be Friday evening starting at 11:00 pm, and i hope you are as excited as i am to watch Dan Beadell (SEB's Director of Party Planning) bust a move!

Lastly, Jamie Kennedy...how exciting it is that?! Another large name comedy act to visit our school. Last year, Nick Swardson was such a success, and so well received by campus, that there was no way the Student Events Board could not bring back another comedy headliner to campus. Nothing like a bit of laughter to balance out the very talented musical acts they have brought/will bring this year, with the likes of Chad Stokes in October and the all-day outdoor music festival, Mayday Revolution on April 30th to look forward to.

All this happening this week, and i have not even mentioned the Game Center and everything it provides. Make sure to check that out, as we have received Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, continuing our expansion of games and improvement of services offered.

Anyway, i hope to see everyone out at the great events this week, or around the Student Center!

Until next time, be easy.

jared...aka lil j

Getting ready for this weekend!

The weekends on WAC campus have been pretty dull this semester. But this weekend and the entire week following it are going to be A-W-E-S-O-M-E!! Tonight there is the Black and White Party courtesy of Black Student Union. It's from 9-2 in Center Stage (The Egg). Saturday night is DRAG BALL!!! This event is from 8-1 in Center Stage (The Egg). Come dressed in your best drag! There will be men in dresses and heels, and ladies in suites and ties!!

Each day next week there is a comedy event. Make sure to check these out on the event calendar on the OSA homepage (www.osa.washcoll.edu) and on the large Calendar on the first floor of Hodson Hall. The biggest event is Jamie Kennedy on Sunday the 22nd. This guy is hysterical and definitely better than last year! Make sure to get your tickets at the Bookstore or at the Info Desk in the Student Center right across form the Game Room. Tickets are $10. Get 'em before they're sold out!

There's no excuse for lame nights this weekend! Please don't judge me :-) Anyway, hey everyone, with this being my first official blog for the office, let me introduce myself. My name is Anjelica and I am the Student Center Intern. That's more than enough about me....

As you know, the month of November means one thing to college students everywhere: mid-semester blues. Sadly, at WAC we are not exempt from that. It's that time in the semester when the papers never seem to end, the exams sneak up on us in the early morning hours, and the presentations haunt our dreams . Where does a college student run to find reprieve from the perils of academia? (Sorry for the dramatics, I think I just wrote my first movie trailer). Well, if you're a student at Washington College, you must look no further than your own student body! (Not literally, YOUR body...nevermind, you get the idea).

In the past few weeks, the WAC student body has produced some awesome stress-relieving events including a Disco Dance Party courtesy of the Student Events Board, the World Series on a projector screen in the new Student Center courtesy of the Office of Student Activities, and pool, ping-pong, and video game tournaments also courtesy of the OSA.

But wait, there's more....this weekend the Black Student Union is throwing its annual Black and White Party and EROS is throwing its annual Drag Ball. But just in case that's not enough to kick Mr. Mid Semester Blues' tooshy, the Student Events Board is hosting its annual Comedy Week the entire week of November 16th!

On a serious note, I would be remiss if I didn't acknowledge the wonderful efforts of the AOPi Sorority in honoring their sister, Jasmine Queen who passed away last year. Her sisters continued their tradition of honoring her with their annual Queen of the Roses 5k Run/Walk to raise money for her scholarship. Jasmine was a friend of mine, and I know she would be proud.

Well, I think I've kept you for long enough.

United we stand in our fight against the mid-semester blues. Have a great week :-)

Well its been a fun and exciting week in the new student center. After a lot of late nights and hard work we are finally getting everything worked out. I do have to thank everyone who helped last Thursday when we were moving in. There are a lot of different events coming up in the next few weeks such as comedy week. this year comedy week is featuring Jamie Kennedy which will be held in Decker Theatre. Seating is limited so you should all get your tickets as soon as they go on sale. Also, there is an event almost every Friday/ Saturday from now until the end of the semester in the Center Stage. For instance tonight is the Disco Dance Party which is being thrown by C1ub 782(better known as the party committee for the SEB). That's all for now. Thanks
Ed

PS Drag Ball will be in The Egg (Center Stage) on Saturday, November 14th!!! Come in your best drag look. We had our first event in the Student Center's performance space; recently renamed Center Stage. The Battle of the Bands was a rockin' night and the costumes on both the performers and the audience were a sight to be seen. I've been poking in and out of the game room, trying my hand at pool (with little sucess) and shuffleboard (even worse!) but every time I go the place packed. I love seeing so many people together in the game room, it's definitely everything I imagined it would be.
In other news, the newsletter just came out for November and it reminded me why I love love love November- THANKSGIVING!
I had a lot of fun picking out all of the colorful squares for the calender because I have to admit I just love thinking about turkey and cranberries and pumpkin pie. It's actually going to be the first time my whole family is going to be together in America for the holiday since I was a little kid. I'm pretty psyched.

Have a great day off!
Katie K

NEW STUDENT CENTER

Hey everyone,

So today we opened up our brand new, beautiful student center. We have pool tables, ping pong, shuffle board, air hockey, Foosball, video games, wii + x-box, and lots of board games in our new game room. Our new cafeteria is open as well as our new cove with all kinds of goodies. I'm so pumped to get some lattes from Java George.

Last night all of the OSA stayed in the student center till after 12am getting it ready for the students. It was a lot of hard work but was worth it, and in the end as we were treated to some ice cream cake, yum! The grand opening celebration is on Tuesday, Nov 3rd at 9am. WACappella will be singing and there will be fun for all I'm sure.

Tonight is the SGA Orange fence party!!! I will be staffing the event from 10:30-12 and I promise you will have an awesome time!!!!

On another note, today is Oct. 30 meaning TOMORROW IS HALLOWEEN!!!! I already have my costume all planned out and you can find me as Patty Mayonnaise at tomorrow's Battle of the Bands in the Quad.

Until next time,
Sophie--LEADership Intern

Student Center Time!

Hey guys!

Well, today we get to finally move into the student center! Let me borrow jared words..."yesssssssssssssssssssssss!" To be blunt, I am really excited. No more old, run down, insect ridden Gibson! Now we get a bright pretty Office space when I can take ping pong breaks and go grab a warm sub for lunch. Excellent. Other than that, I am constructing that giant wall calender in the Hodson Hall Commons, and making the final touches on the newsletter...if only everyone would send me their articles...sigh...Well, I'm off to go grab my keys for our new office! The opening of the building is going to create such a tremendous amount of opportunity for activities and events. We will now have the capability to do anything from pool and video game tournaments, to concerts, comedians, and dance parties. A central place for things to happen on campus will be a welcome change from the previous year, in which space and possibility were somewhat limited due to the construction of Hodson Hall.

In other news on campus, look for all the great events that are upcoming in the next few weeks. With things like the second annual Comedy Week, the end of the semester is sure to be an exciting time for everyone! Hopefully, i will see you around at all the great events different organizations on campus are throwing!!

Until next time, be easy.

jared...aka lil j

The First Ever OSA Blog

Saturday, October 17th was the last day of National Coming Out Week. To celebrate this, EROS, the LGBT and Ally group on the WAC campus, held the Annual Coming Out Tea in the Lit House on Sunday, October 18th. This event allowed people to gather, drink tea, eat snacks and share stories of themselves, friends, family and other people. The environment was safe, accepting and anonymous. It was amazing to be there.

One will not often see or be given the chance to attend events like this on such a socially conservative campus. However, when we can make things like this happen, it reminds people that there are safe, accepting people on campus, people to go to with problems and questions, and that there are others like you on campus, be you LGBT, ally and/or more.

P.S. I found a 1,200 year old white quartz arrowhead on October 1st at the Redman's farm as part of an archaeological excavation for my Doing Archaeology class with Dr. Julie Markin.
