Almost Over!

Hey Washington College! We are officially down to two weeks left! *insert cheers here*! With classes winding down and hammering us with work, it is a hectic time in the office of student activities! We had some vicious poker action yesterday, complete with mood-setting poker lights. When I left at midnight, there were still about 9 players left! Yikes! Well, congrats to all involved, it was fun and exciting! On sunday, the Office of Student Activities is sponsoring Ride For Mom down at Wilmer Park with Andrew Laux! It starts at 9 and goes to 1 pm! Be there because I will! Have a wicked hot friday WAC! Adios!

7th Inning Stretch

The semester is winding down, and we are in the home stretch with the last couple weeks upon us. But, that does not mean we are not busy-busy getting ready to end the semester with a bang. In the next two weeks, we have multiple events, the first ever Student Center Triathlon, the second annual WAC Iron Chef, the third annual Leadership Celebration, and the second annual Mayday Revolution. To go along with those traditions, we have the last open mic night tomorrow evening and the last dance of the semester on Saturday, April 24th. Needless to say, it is going to be an exciting last couple weeks.

Also, i would like to give a shout out to Alex Insel and the Traditions Committee for all their work with Survivor. From the feedback, the people who participated thoroughly enjoyed the event and found it to be one of the best events they have witnessed at Washington College. Alex Insel and Emma Schlauch (the new Director of Traditions, because Alex Insel is studying abroad and won't be here next semester...) put in a ton of time preparing for this event, and should be applauded for their efforts. Throughout the semester, Alex spent tremendous amounts of time and energy putting every detail of Survivor together, and it turned out to be better than advertised. Well done Alex, Emma, and the Traditions Committee, well done!

As I’m sure you remember (because you read this blog religiously and have memorized every single line), last semester I wrote about “Mr. Mid-Semester Blues.”

Well today, I’m going to tell you about his second cousin twice removed on his mother’s, father’s, brother’s side…. “Mr. End of the Semester Blues.” That’s right, the year is coming to a close, and as the final projects and papers pile up, Washington College students are looking for a reprieve from the madness.

AND THAT’S WHERE WE COME IN!!!

The year may be ending, but it’s certainly not over yet, and we’ve got the ridiculously fun events and programming to prove it. The WAC Series of Poker is going into its final week before the championship tournament. The competition has been intense, and at this point, anyone could go home with grand prize! Also, the SEB will be hosting WAC’s first ever Survivor Competition. Director of Traditions, Alex Insel, and his team have spent countless hours planning and amazing, incredibly fun two days of competition for the Survivor participants. Now, I know all of this sounds wonderful and you’re thinking to yourself, “How could it possibly get any better than this?”

WELL IT DOES….

In the next couple of weeks the OSA and SEB will be hosting: Iron Chef WAC, the Student Center Triathlon, the May Day Revolution, and THE LEADERSHIP CELEBRATION.

So, join as we fight to defeat Mr. End of the Semester Blues with one awesome event after another!

All love. ALWAYS.

Anjelica

PS. Follow us on Twitter and friend us on Facebook!

Another semester is quickly coming to an end. there is a lot still going on at washington college though. in the next few weeks there are several big events including beach bash this weekend and big man on campus next Wednesday. Also next week is the musical A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. The cast and crew has worked incredibly hard for the last 3 plus months to bring this production to campus. It is ridiculously funny and has quite a few plot twists. The SEB will also be hosting the survivor competion this weekend which will have parts filmed. while there are a number of other events through april the SEB will be hosting the second annual MAYDAY REVOLUTION on april 30th to kick off the mayday events. this event will be held in old kent circle and will feature a number of musical acts as well as lunch and big blowup things. So I look forward to seeing everyone at some if not all of these events. enjoy the rest of the semester. Thanks

There will be many members of the OSA and the Leadership Committee sitting outside the DH waiting for you to sign up your favorite or the best student or faculty adviser. So come on over and nominate! Or get the form online! Visit the OSA hompage to download the leadership forms!

yay spring!

soooo i think spring is almost officially here! well at least weather wise it feels like spring is! let's hope the beautiful weather keeps up throughout the rest of the semester and with spring comes new beginnings. speaking of new beginnings, SEB is just wrapping up their selection process for new Exec Board members next year AND the OSA internship program's applications are due today, which means by the end of next week, the office will be wrapping up the semester, but infusing new life into our programs, ideas, and thoughts. nothing is more exciting than the energy new people bring.

on another note, OSA started its first annual WAC Series of Poker last night. the turnout was great, and everyone had a really great time! thanks goes out to Anjelica Jackson, for braving new frontiers (things she doesn't know about) and pulling everything together for it. also, the Student Events Board is gearing up for their third party of the semester, Mardi Gras Madness, which will include a chocolate fountain, other yummy treats, and grooves to move to!

i hope everyone has enjoyed the week of gorgeous weather. feel free to stop by and visit us!

On March 1st, 2010, a theft occurred within Hodson Hall Commons. OSA's amazing Student Center Intern had created the most beautiful, four foot tall ace of spades this campus has ever seen! Within one hour of putting the card on display in order to advertise for the poker league, it had mysteriously vanished. A report has been filed with Public Safety; however, they have yet to leap into action to solve this case. It was a sad day, and week, within the OSA.

On Friday March 19th, OSA is funding SEB's Mardi Gras Madness party. This party will follow the step competition. This awesome party will start at 9PM in The Egg. Come early so you make your own masks before dancing the night away while surrounded by amazing decorations!

An important random fact that YOU should know:

The 2007 ranking for gender Inequality:

You'll notice that the USA is at .7; however, one should keep in mind that the average female earns .77 to every male's dollar. Moreover, race is most likely not factored into these statistics. So, how correct is this chart? Determining how skewed this chart is could certainly prove it to be non-representative of the actual and true inequalities existing within the USA population.

Interns Gone Wild!!!

SPRING BREAK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Okay, now that I’ve gotten that out, I can be serious. Wait, what am I saying? I work in the OSA. There’s no seriousness allowed here…..Just kidding. Please don’t fire me.

You’ll have to excuse my ridiculous amount of excitement, but today marks the first day of SPRING BREAK here on campus and I couldn’t be happier. But, even more exciting than that are the scrumptious (good word right?) things that will be happening in the Office of Student Activities when we get back. I wish I could sit here and list all of the awesomeness for you, but in case you forgot, IT’S SPRING BREAK PEOPLE!!!!!

So here’s an awesomeness rundown (buckle up kids, this is going to get wild):

- Applications for OSA Interns are out!!! That’s right, we’re inviting new people to join the “OSA Circus” (© 2010, used with permission from Jill Obermeier, all rights reserved) and you could be one of them! I know I’ve said it before, but I work in the best place on earth with the best people on earth, and if you don’t believe me, come see for yourself!

- The Ping Pong and Pool Leagues are going into the playoffs! They’ll each be playing for $300.

- The Wac Series of Poker League will kick off right after Spring Break! Players from all over campus will be competing for a $200 Prize Package! If that doesn’t sound like awesomeness, I don’t know what does.

Also, I’d like to give a special shout-out to my good friends on the SEB who are working their tooshies off with their own awesomeness like the Boondock Saints Movie night, a Mardi Gras Party, and WAC Survivor!

Okay everyone. I've got to go. I hate to leave you all….but the fact that I won’t be in class for a week will ease my pain.

All love. ALWAYS.

Happy "Vernal Equinox Respite"…or, as we cool kids like to call it……..SPRING BREAK!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anjelica

P.S. I sincerely apologize for my excessive use of exclamation marks. I have a problem.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wednesday, March 3, 2010

Hello all. firstly I must apologize for not having this done earlier, please forgive me for my tardiness. Now on to the good stuff. The snow is almost gone and hopefully we wont get anymore. Also 59 hours until spring break starts not that we didn't just have a week off a little while ago. For those of you that don't know the SEB and the OSA both have applications out for next year. Both organizations play a major role on campus and I encourage everyone on campus that wants to leave a mark to apply. the applications can be found in the Office of STudent Activities or on the respective websites. Also for those of you that dont know boondock saints ii will be playing the thursday after break. Also the drama department will be showing Spring Awakening after break as well as the musical A funny Thing Happened on the way to the Forum. This is the first musical in a number of years at WAC and I suggest everyone goes to see it. Also without realizing spring break has infact crept up on us again and in just a few short weeks the seniors will graduate and summer will be in full swing. Its hard to believe that WAC saw record amounts of snow two weeks ago and now we are getting ready for next year. Also I hope everyone enjoyed Birthday ball this year. Once again I lost track of the number of hours I was there but I do know that the sound only started working correctly as the first peopel walked into the doors. oh well it was a great event. Thats all for now. Until next time. Thanks
Ed

Post B-day Ball

So Birthday ball is now over and you may be asking yourself, what do I have to look forward to for the rest of the semester?

Well no fear because the OSA/SEB has some awesome events being brewed up in the next few weeks. Just this week is Deal or no Deal on Thursday in the EGG, and Techno night on Friday!!! Keep your eyes open for other fabulous on-goings by the OSA/SEB.

Also help the local RAPE CRISIS center by attending the Vagina Monologues on Friday night. It is at the Prince Theater right here in Chestertown!!! The cost is $15 and our goal is to reach $5000 for charity. Every cent is worth it when helping women in need.

It is February and you know what that means, Black History Month! Look around campus for banners and information recognizing America's black history by various diverse organizations.

Also, those in Haiti still need our help! Even if you have given that money is gone and spent. They still need more and every cent helps. Please continue to donate to those who need our help. Outside the dining hall they are selling all kinds of nifty stuff for charity, stop by when you get the change and give, give, give!!!

Ok, cool here is a fun fact...

The character of Optimus Prime on the popular 1980s animated television series "Transformers" was originally written to speak with a Jamaican accent.

This fact brought to you by factropolis.com

Take it easy!~~Sophie

Mid Semester Recap

Ahh February is almost over..and that means Spring Break and the second half of the semester are almost upon us! So far this semester we have had an amazing line-up of events, with of course Birthday Ball, Heads You Win!, multiple dance parties, open mic nights, an indoor movie, a Super Bowl Party, a karaoke night, along with many more. To top that all off, there are pool and ping-pong leagues currently running in the Game Center, not to mention, sign-ups for the new WAC Series of Poker (WSOP), that starts the week after spring break!

Now for the best news of all, it is that time of year again where people can apply to be more involved on campus. Currently, the Student Events Board is accepting applications for the Executive Board, AND the Office of Student Activities Internship Program is about to put out applications for internships. If you are looking for leadership experience or pre-professional experience, coupled with a captivating creative outlet, then an internship or executive board position is for you!

One last thing, i would like to thank the Birthday Ball Planning Committee for all their hard work this year. Without them, this office, coupled with the Student Government Association would not have been able to plan and execute such a wonderful Birthday Ball event. So if you see Kate McKelvey on campus (or any of her Assistant Directors), please give her a HUGE HUG...or maybe just a thank you would do ;-)

Birthday BALL!

Another huge event finished, another school week started! Birthday Ball this year was fantastic, so many crazy lights(enough to fill Ed's quota for the year I'm sure) and many many alumni back to WAC. I had a blast reuniting with them over some sweet, albeit insane, dance music and of course all of the parties! This years theme was Ice Palace, and although there was actually no ice to speak of, the decor was pretty wicked. Snowflakes, music, dancing....what more do you need! Anyway, I would just like to thank everyone involved with making this night a success, including yes. Edward Hoegg. Champion among men(in the realm of lighting design that is). Just kidding Ed, but the OSA really is appreciative to all of those who helped set up and tear down very early Sunday morning. So lets give them a hand! (Clap, Clap, Clap). Alright! Well, have another great week WAC and remember, Spring Break is only two weeks away! Adios amigos.

Tuesday, February 16, 2010

Classes are back in session and there are four awesome events coming up during the next two weeks of February. On Wednesday the 17th, there is Open Mic Night in The Egg. On the 18th, OSA is funding SEB's first Karaoke Night in The Egg. Come out to enjoy some music and express your own musical talent! On the 25th, students will have a chance to compete on Deal or No Deal in The Egg. On the 26th is Techno Night! It's going to be awesome and I cannot wait!! Come out to the Egg for an awesome night! Aside from those events, tomorrow, the 17th, is a double header basketball game! It starts at 6PM with the Women's team! It's also senior night. So, come out and support WAC teams and athletes!

Random fact of the week:
Over the last centuries and especially the last decades, acceptance of homosexuality by people in the West and in Asia has increased, as is shown by this graph (figures for the US). Check it out!!

This Is Narnia!

Powder. Slush. Flakes. Crystals. Flurries. SNOW. No matter how you say it, it all adds up to a week of canceled classes and lots and lots of fun in the Office of Student Activities. But, before I tell you all the ways that the OSA has been making Frosty proud this week, let me catch you up on what we did before Chestertown, Maryland turned into the North Pole.

On Sunday, we, along with Campus Christian Fellowship and Campus and Campus Catholic Ministries, showed the big game on a big screen (a projector screen set up in the Student Center Lounge). Today, the Student Events Board completed its second annual “Heads You Win” tournament. Some twelve hours later, a lucky, and frozen Shoreperson walked away with $300 in prize money!

Over the past week, WAC has been one part Winter Wonderland and one part Frozen Nightmare. But, as usual, we’re taking it all in stride. Today, the SEB hosted a Snowman Making contest. Over the next few days as we’re anticipating round 2 of the blizzard from…well, wherever blizzards come from…the Student Center will be filled with board game nights, video game tournaments, and much, much, more! So come out, because let’s face it, classes are canceled and it’s time to celebrate.

Stay safe and warm and I’ll see you in the Student Center!

Blizzard!

Good morning! I assume all of you are currently snug in your dorms on this wonderful snowy morning. The screens outside my window are so covered that I can barely see outside but I prepared to be stuck in for days and I'm just enjoying the quiet.
Speaking of quiet, you can bet there will be no quiet tomorrow evening for.....THE SUPERBOWL! After day and a half of staying indoors you should definitely come out to a great WAC tradition- the Superbowl party hosted by CCF, this year it is co-hosted by CCM and yours truly- the Office of Student Activities! There will be wings, pizza and subs to go around so come down the Student Center and check it out.
In other news, league registration is finally over and we have a wonderfully full Ping Pong and Pool schedule for the next 6 weeks or so!

Have fun in the snow and be safe,
Katie K

Before any of that however the SEB have a lot of cool events coming up including the valentines day dance. Also the OSA will be showing the Superbowl in the egg on Sunday. there will be free food and the game should be good (even if the cards are not playing). Open House!

Hi everyone! Just checking in for the first time this semester! Its been a pretty hectic one on my end. Class, getting everything ready for the students again, its been a real hassle. One awesome thing that we are doing is having a staff/faculty open house on Thursday between 3 and 5 PM! Here the faculty and staff can meet both the SGA and the OSA and.....drumroll....Happy Hour! Yes, there will be a cash bar and yes it will be fun! Can't wait to be there! Hope everyone has a great start to the year and beyond! Much love WAC,

Tim

BOOM...we got you!

Second week...the week after our first together...and what a good first week it was! The office had two very successful programs, with the showing of Law Abiding Citizen and the Dance Back to WAC party. Both programs spotlighted the two new members of Student Events Board, Alex Lating, Director of Variety Events, and Sally O'Donnell, Director of Party Planning. Each added their own new twists to typical events, with the offering of food (mozzarella sticks!) and fun. Look for more great events to come from them and the rest of SEB!

In the world of the Student Center, we have new leagues forming, with cash prizes for the winners, so make sure to pick up your registration form for pool or ping-pong (or both!). Also, Student Activities is proud to be holding its semesterly Leadership Experience (summit of leaders to explore leadership). This time we have tons of differing leadership topics to experience and explore. Look for more information from OSA in the coming week!

On a finishing note, the Student Events Board will be hosting the first open mic night of the semester in collaboration with Musician's Union. AND, myself, jared halter, is planning to perform...so if you are looking for a laugh from someone making a complete fool of themselves out of a lack of talent, make sure to come check that out! While you are adding that to your calendar, place SEB General Interest Meeting on Thursday night down there as well. Where you will be able to meet the executive board and hear how your voice can make a difference!

Anyway, i hope everyone is enjoying their semester, and i see you around soon!

Sring Semester 2010

Hey everyone! We're all back from winter break and classes have begun. My junior year has definitely been filled with some of the most amazing classes I've had. For the first full weekend back, SEB has an awesome dance party planned. It will be this Friday in the Egg and starts at 9PM. Some awesome new video games have come in and new ping pong, pool, poker, NHL and FIFA leagues are being formed. If you're interested, make sure to stop by the Student Center and sign up! As far as the web goes, I will be working with WAC clubs to get their websites up and running, as well as updating old sites. If you're a part of a club and want to work on the website, please email Lmuir2.
